Rehabilitation in Prison By Christopher Hall CJA 23 November 11, Instructor: William Dudley Prison rehabilitation programs are the methods stated by criminal justice authorities to keep prisoners away from committing further crimes. Previously, the purpose of such programs was to improve the character of prisoners but now it has been directed towards complete avoidance of crimes. These programs assist criminals to start new life free from criminal activities.

This is due to prison overcrowding, which is when the number of prisoners exceeds the capacity of the jail they are being held in. In some areas, such as California, this has become a substantial problem. Many jails do not have the resources to provide for additional convicts once they have reached capacity, so they must figure out a way to deal with these excess prisoners, which most of the time includes spending more money. Other times, the prisoner may be released well before their sentence is up. This has raised many conflicts, ones we are still trying to find solutions for. The stigma associated with incarceration, combined with the effects of being imprisoned, often results in a bleak outlook on life.

One such argument is that since prisoners have reduced chances of employment upon release, some resort to criminal activities as their best option for survival. The issue of drug cartels is another problem that is currently plaguing most prison facilities in the United States. Many underground drug networks within prison systems promote criminal drug use, hence making it difficult for the government to fight drug and substance abuse Cambers
Criminals will always find ways to get guns and banning handguns will certainly not stop them. John Stossel does make a good point when he states that having laws against guns is also restricting self defense on people. Taking away the ability to buy handguns leaves citizens with less self-defense options. This raises a much bigger and serious problem, leaving people vulnerable by taking away their right to self defense and Stossel is correct to say that gun bans preventing citizens from using guns in self-defense, and giving criminals a much bigger advantage.
