Works that fall under its definition may certainly possess a heavy-handedness, such as moralizing or lecturing, but these qualities are not prerequisites, so long as there is some amount of both instruction and readability in a piece. Didacticism began before the written word. Early cultures dispersed knowledge and entertainment through oral storytelling. One generation passed them on to the next, and the stories altered slightly to reflect cultural changes and evolutions in attitude.

Epic poetry

Dactylic hexameter also known as "heroic hexameter" and "the meter of epic" is a form of meter or rhythmic scheme in poetry. It is traditionally associated with the quantitative meter of classical epic poetry in both Greek and Latin and was consequently considered to be the grand style of Western classical poetry. Hexameters also form part of elegiac poetry in both languages, the elegiac couplet being a dactylic hexameter line paired with a dactylic pentameter line. In strict dactylic hexameter, each foot would be a dactyl a long and two short syllables , but classical meter allows for the substitution of a spondee two long syllables in place of a dactyl in most positions. Specifically, the first four feet can either be dactyls or spondees more or less freely.

The question of what poetry is for is one that has as many answers as it has people who try to answer it. For Ezra Pound, following the teachers of medieval oratory, the answer was ut moveat, ut doceat, ut delectate ; that poetry should move, teach and delight. Most contemporary readers would probably have no issue with the first and third of these precepts, but the didactic use of poetry went somewhat out of fashion with the Romantic movement and is still not much valued by many readers. Other poets set out to teach us things that may be of more practical use.
