The main theme in The Lottery is blindly following tradition. The author develops the theme of blindly following the tradition no matter how bad it is. The author also developed the theme by using the same old black box, yet not being the original, to symbolize not changing tradition. The author made the theme by showing that everything is not what it seems. There was some hesitation when the town members were asked for help. Implying that they were fearful about touching the box.

Literary Analysis Of The Lottery By Shirley Jackson | Bartleby

A modern parable, this story is often classified as a horror story. It tells the story of a small town that holds a lottery each year. The person picked by this lottery is then stoned to death by the town. Considered by many to be one of the best short stories of the 20th century and banned by many others, this is not an easy story to understand because it leaves so many questions unanswered.

Literary Analysis Of The Lottery, By Shirley Jackson

Each author forces us to examine the human condition ND not blindly take part in rituals that harm the human race as a whole. These authors were able to imagine a place so similar to our own environment with ideals and occurrences vastly different from what anyone could have experienced. I find it a bit ironic that the winners of both stories partake in gambling and lose their lives as a result.

A short story is normally evaluated based on its ability to provide a satisfying and complete presentation of its characters and themes. Narrating the story from a third person point of view, Shirley uses symbolism, foreshadowing and suspense to illustrate. Due to World War II ending around this time, her story took some strong criticism. The people at that time wanted uplifting stories, and this story is the very opposite because of its underlying theme of tradition and conformity.
