Alan Alda grew up in show business. His father Robert was an established actor, having starred in movies like Rhapsody in Blue , but during Alda's childhood, he was doing the rounds of burlesque shows, dragging his family along with him and putting young Alda into the act and photo ops whenever it served him best. Either despite or because of his background, Alda followed his father into the entertainment business. Alda started out as a performer, quickly became the star, and ended up writing and directing some of the show's most memorable episodes.
