Sixth-graders need to learn about narrative writing, so they can write personal or fictional stories that include characters, a setting and a structured plot line. As a teacher, parent or tutor, strive to help students learn how to develop an effective narrative writing style that contains exposition, a climax and a resolution. Sixth-graders should also incorporate details and important themes into their narratives. Explain the definition of narrative writing so that sixth-graders know how it differs from report writing and research assignments. Explain that narrative writing always tells a story and that the story can be about real or imaginary events , but it must include characters and a logical sequence of events. Narrative writing should also include descriptive language and sensory details that help readers connect with the setting, characters and story line.
