Running economy RE measures runners' energy utilization when running at an aerobic intensity, and many physiological and biomechanical factors contribute to it. Those who are able to consume less oxygen while running at a given velocity are said to have a better running economy. In distance running , an athlete may attempt to improve performance through training designed to improve running economy. Running economy has been found to be a good predictor of race performance; it has been found to be a stronger correlate of performance than maximal oxygen uptake VO 2 max in trained runners with the same values. The idea of running economy is increasingly used to understand performance, as new technology can drastically lower running times over marathon distances, independent of physiology or even training. The recent accomplishment of Eliud Kipchoge running a marathon in under two hours has enhanced interest in the subject.

The Effect of Short-Term Swiss Ball Training on Core Stability and Running Economy
Backwards running BR results in greater cardiopulmonary response and muscle activity compared with forward running FR. BR has traditionally been used in rehabilitation for disorders such as stroke and lower leg extremity injuries, as well as in short bursts during various athletic events. The aim of this study was to measure the effects of sustained backwards running training on forward running economy in trained male athletes.
