This case study, 'Leading an effective primary team', focuses on the concept of middle leadership in a rural primary school, as well as the leadership challenges and how they are managed hold relevance for other phases and sizes of school. This case study looks at the nature of team leadership in a small, rural primary school. In such a situation the distinction between senior leadership, middle leadership and team membership is very fluid, because most staff will at the same time be both a leader and a member of several teams, all comprising the same people. This poses a distinct challenge for everyone who takes on a leadership role in the school, including the headteacher, but that experience may also hold some valuable lessons for leaders in larger organisations. This study focuses particularly on the experience of Hannah Matthews, who took on the task of leading colleagues in literacy development. As a new team leader this programme will give me the foundation to develop fully into my role. Davies has been very supportive with my learning and development, with support from both my coach and tutor. They have seen me through from a 16 year old school leaver, and given me all the means to progress, making sure I am fully supported with anything I aspire to do. As well as fully engaging in everything I do, my employer has offered support, opportunity and exposure to things that will help me with my studies.
