This thesis suggests that this reality is often the unintentional but inevitable outcome of traditional design thinking models that fail to acknowledge basic principles of the concept of sustainable development. Brought forth as a concept on which to base needed changes in global policy by the Brundtland Report in , sustainable development is changing the way we look at the critical issues of the modern world. William McDonough, architect and advocate for sustainable development, has stated that all models and phases of design require rethinking. He suggests the traditional linear process, a cradle-to-grave paradigm of a design process resulting in an end product should be exchanged for a cyclical, or cradle-to-cradle process that considers the subsequent use and future adaptations of the products of design. In particular, the definition omits social and economic issues, which are critical to the understanding of sustainable development as encompassing the three interdependent areas of social and economic development and environmental protection. Humanitarian design is the essential architectural discipline that engages social and economic issues, and therefore principles of humanitarian design need to be adopted into architectural discourse in order to realize a complete model for sustainable development.

This section is designed for those who are new to humanitarian action, to provide a short overview of key aspects that affect innovation in a humanitarian setting, and pointers to where you can find more resources. The current humanitarian system was initially set up in the wake of World War II and was substantially reformed in the s and s. The system is a mix of laws, legal instruments, mandated and non-mandated organisations, structures, systems and processes. There are multiple actors in the humanitarian system. They can be generally grouped into five categories:. If you are unfamiliar with the humanitarian environment, understanding the roles of each group will help you navigate who you might work or partner with and what their role is during an emergency response. You will often need to liaise with actors at both headquarters and field levels, for example, for initial authorisation or access, and then day-to-day operations and collaboration.

Published Monday, January 19, In the field of humanitarian architecture, post-disaster provision is more than just supplying shelter. It's about involving communities in places of uncertainty and rapid change, delivering the best rebuilds that incorporate future risk mitigation in the design.

While some architects are drawn to the challenges of creating striking designs in big cities that will be marveled by many, others are passionate about finding solutions to basic community needs in humanitarian architecture. When combined with architecture, it means striving for this through built designs that offer safety, shelter and a sustainable solution to housing. Humanitarian architecture is about problem solving at both the minute and the grand scale. It may mean installing a system to harness rainwater for a single village or it may mean rebuilding an entire city flattened by an earthquake. But its fundamental role is to look after the welfare and needs of local communities over the aesthetics of grand designs.
