Sign up to our newsletter. Acoustic emission non-destructive testing is vital for bearing condition monitoring. Bearings are used in a wide array of rotating machinery such as pumps, engines, motors. Damaged bearings cause inefficiency resulting in undue downtime and costs. If left unchecked, it could eventually catastrophic machinery failure.

September 9, From early in the use of FRP for corrosion resistant equipment, challenges have presented themselves as engineers had to develop new design and construction methods to suit the behavior of the material. Early design approaches included use of metal vessel design standards, material design that did not correctly consider the reinforcement, quality control of fabrication and assembly, transportation damage, and damage from over-stressing at proof testing following metal vessel procedures, coupled with in-service abuse, process upsets, and other structural damage. Unfortunately, the early legacy of these challenges was numerous FRP failures, sometimes injuring workers.

What Is Acoustic Emission Testing? A Definitive Guide

In a pipeline company planned to introduce acoustic emission AE technology, but there were some doubts about the effectiveness of this technology, so it invited our center to test five tanks with AE before their follow-up internal inspections and to verify the validity of the AE test by comparing AE results with the follow-up inspection results. The results show that the AE test results of four tanks are in line with the follow-up internal inspections, and one AE test result is severely deviated with the real tank bottom status. In view of the deviation, the reasons are analyzed from four aspects, i. Ultimately, the company plans to apply acoustic emission technology to their tank maintenance process. This paper describes in detail the acoustic emission detection and verification process in order to give some references for the industry counterparts, while promoting the development of the AE technology.

Non-invasive monitoring of avalanche formation and release processes, through the use of Acoustic Emission AE technique, has been a research challenge since long time. In present investigation AE technique is implemented to monitor the avalanche formation and release processes through a case study of a natural avalanche event reported in Great Himalaya. The specialized AE sensor-arrestor arrays, established over the avalanche starting zone, in conjunction to a high speed multichannel AE acquisition system have successfully recorded the avalanche event passed through the course of instability development followed by release of avalanche. A new method is devised to compute the AE based instability index, and same has been applied to quantify the instability levels of a snowpack.
