Slaughterhouse-five was copyrighted in and is a book about the firebombing in Dresden which had killed , people. The main character is Billy Pilgrim, a very young infantry scout who is captured in the Battle of the Bulge and quartered to a slaughterhouse where he and other soldiers. A funny-looking, weak youth, he does well in high school, then he enrolls in night classes at the Ilium School of Optometry, and is soon drafted into the army. He serves as a chaplain's assistant, is sent into the Battle of the Bulge, and almost gets taken prisoner by the Germans.

Because there is a reason for everything, every thought someone has comes from somewhere, and no one tried to discover or learn why Billy was acting abnormal compared to the rest of his town. Over time when he left, he was afraid another war was going to happen. Billy having PTSD shaped his life a lot differently than others but now in this age of time, a lot of people are dealing with this disorder.

Regardless of the age of the people entering war, unless one obtains the mental capacity to witness numerous deaths and stay unaffected, he or she is not equipped to enter war. Kurt Vonnegut portrays the horrors of war in Slaughterhouse Five, through the utilization of satire, symbolism, and imagery. The main occurrence in the novel was the nonsensical bombing of the culturally enriched and beautiful city in Dresden, Germany. Over the past two months I read the classic novel Slaughterhouse Five. In this essay I will summarize the novel, do an analysis of the main character, and analyze the theme of the novel.
