Because the hero of the play is an outsider, a Moor, we have an idea how blacks were regarded in England, in Elizabethan times. There are many references that bring about the issue of racism from the very beginning to the end. In the tragedy, where Othello is coming from is not mentioned, yet through the descriptions the reader is informed that he belongs to one of the Eastern nationalities such as African, Ottoman Turk or Arab. In this paper I am going to analyze some episodes involving a rejudicial, racist attitude and try to discuss whether Shakespeare was a racist or not. He becomes the victim of a seemingly honest white character, Iago in the play.

For the duration of the play the character Othello encounters various verbal slanders of racism and slurs leading to his spiral and demise. To the extent in which it contributes to him murdering his wife out of jealousy and, later, executing himself.

Due to its intrusive presence in all day to day actions, it has become a focal point for varying types. The story follows the powerful Moor of Venice, Othello, and his tragic moral, military and marital downfall due to the corruption instigated by his jealous ancient, Iago.
On a street in Venice, there is an argument between Roderigo, a nobleman, and Iago, an ancient captain in the defense forces. Roderigo, in love with the noble lady Desdemona, has paid large sums of money to Iago, on the understanding that Iago would give her gifts from him and praise him to her. Roderigo hopes to win Desdemona's love and marry her.
