Environmental injustice is frequently studied through a lens of environmental racism, but we wanted to explore other potential causes of exposure to environmental hazards like air and water pollution. To do this, we decided to look to a region we knew to be racially homogenous to see which groups of people were most affected by environmental injustice. We were also interested in what causes some people to be able to escape environmental hazards while others either choose to stay, or are unable to leave. We chose to examine West Virginia in particular because of its unique combination of demographics, industry, resources, and its location in the Appalachian region.
