The ethical theory of John Stuart Mill is most extensively articulated in his classical text Utilitarianism Its goal is to justify the utilitarian principle as the foundation of morals. This principle says actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote overall human happiness. So, Mill focuses on consequences of actions and not on rights nor ethical sentiments. Educated by his father James Mill who was a close friend to Jeremy Bentham , John Stuart Mill came in contact with utilitarian thought at a very early stage of his life. Mill remained a utilitarian throughout his life.

Jeremy Bentham , born February 15, , London , England—died June 6, , London , English philosopher, economist, and theoretical jurist, the earliest and chief expounder of utilitarianism. Jeremy Bentham was a philosopher, economist, jurist, and legal reformer and the founder of modern utilitarianism , an ethical theory holding that actions are morally right if they tend to promote happiness or pleasure and morally wrong if they tend to promote unhappiness or pain among all those affected by them. Jeremy Bentham is important for being one of the founders of modern utilitarianism , a main current of philosophical ethics since the late 18th century, for his defense of psychological and ethical hedonism , and for his far-reaching proposals for the reform of Parliament , the legal code, the judiciary, and the prison system in Britain. John Stuart Mill Utilitarianism Essay

Utilitarianism is a family of normative ethical theories that prescribe actions that maximize happiness and well-being for all affected individuals. For instance, Jeremy Bentham , the founder of utilitarianism, described utility as "that property in any object, whereby it tends to produce benefit, advantage, pleasure, good, or happiness Utilitarianism is a version of consequentialism , which states that the consequences of any action are the only standard of right and wrong. Unlike other forms of consequentialism, such as egoism and altruism , utilitarianism considers the interests of all humans equally. Proponents of utilitarianism have disagreed on a number of points, such as whether actions should be chosen based on their likely results act utilitarianism , or whether agents should conform to rules that maximize utility rule utilitarianism.
Consequentialism is a class of normative , teleological ethical theories that holds that the consequences of one's conduct are the ultimate basis for any judgment about the rightness or wrongness of that conduct. Thus, from a consequentialist standpoint, a morally right act or omission from acting is one that will produce a good outcome. Consequentialism, along with eudaimonism , falls under the broader category of teleological ethics , a group of views which claim that the moral value of any act consists in its tendency to produce things of intrinsic value. Different consequentialist theories differ in how they define moral goods , with chief candidates including pleasure, the absence of pain, the satisfaction of one's preferences, and broader notions of the "general good". Consequentialism is usually contrasted with deontological ethics or deontology , in that deontology, in which rules and moral duty are central, derives the rightness or wrongness of one's conduct from the character of the behaviour itself rather than the outcomes of the conduct.
